Cartia's discontinued NewsMaps site promoted the concept of information landscapes by offering public maps of news media coverage (left). The IDIOM Semantic Systems research project uses force-directed placement algorithms to generate layered thematic maps, and a Web Map Service (WMS) to serve information landscapes as image tiles for geobrowsing platforms. The NASA World Wind screenshot shows an early prototype of this service (right).
